We have a fantastic graduate programme and are dedicated to providing our Law Clerks with comprehensive training and an understanding of a wide range of legal work.
One of McCaw Lewis’ strengths is that they are actively involved with the University of Waikato, and have a passion for developing the next generation of lawyers. My clerkship with the firm is an example of this.
I personally came to know Brendan Cullen and Daniel Shore, Directors in the Dispute Resolution Team, through University competitions and events and their lecturing of the Civil Procedure class. It was through these associations that I was invited to join McCaw Lewis as a part time Law Clerk. This work experience helped focus my studies and provided me with a real-world context for the academic material I was learning. During semester breaks and the summer holiday period I worked full-time, which allowed me to get involved in the wider work environment of the firm.
McCaw Lewis has an excellent work culture, and values individuals achieving a healthy work/life balance. I was surprised to discover that life as a Law Clerk is not just shuffling paper and working until 10.00pm at night! Instead I undertook interesting research, drafted documents and contributed meaningful work towards our clients’ objectives. The team ensured that I had all the help I needed, and actively looked to increase my skill and knowledge base in a supportive way. But above all of that, the one thing that stood out to me early on was that the staff like each other and enjoy each other’s company!
My clerkship with McCaw Lewis has given me an excellent start to my legal career.
