Darcina Manuel wins bronze!

Darcina Manuel, one of the two Commonwealth Games athletes sponsored by McCaw Lewis, will be bringing home a bronze medal after defeating the Canadian former world champion in the women’s under-57kg judo class. Having gone down by a small margin to Scotland’s eventual silver medallist in her first fight, Darcina dropped to the repecharge where a win against Mauritius allowed her to fight for the bronze medal. With less than a minute left in the bronze medal fight, Darcina managed to force her opponent to the ground and into submission with a strangle hold to win by ippon (the highest score a judoka can achieve).

The 21-year-old from Gisborne is the third Kiwi medallist, and first individual Kiwi medallist at the Glasgow Games.

Speaking after her win Darcina said, “I’m so overwhelmed and humbled by all the support, and proud to have represented Aotearoa at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. This meant so much to me and my whānau; I’m stoked to be bringing home a medal. Mauriora!”

The Directors and staff of McCaw Lewis congratulate Darcina, and her whānau, on this tremendous achievement and will continue to watch her progress over the years to come. We now look forward to Stuart Farquhar’s qualifying rounds for the javelin throw, which are scheduled for the morning of Saturday 2 August (New Zealand time).
