Great Tennis on Display at the Waikato Open-Graded Tournament

The sun was shining on the courts of the Waikato Tennis Centre during the Waikato Tennis Open-Graded Tournament on Sunday 31 January. Players battled the heat, and their opposition, across various grades.

McCaw Lewis was proud to sponsor the event, and the winners of both the men’s and women’s singles tournaments took home cash prizes of $250 each.

It was a local affair in both finals with Mandi Portegys (Cambridge Racquets Club) proving too strong for Mahinarangi Waikato Women’s Player of the year 2020, Mahinarangi Warren (Beerescourt Tennis Club and Samoa Tennis), in the women’s singles 6-0 6-2.

In the men’s singles new Kiwi Tennis coach, Cam Wenham, came through a tight battle with Benjamin Ranby-Al (Te Awamutu Tennis Club) 5-4 (5) 4-0. Cam is an experienced coach, having worked in the USA previously.

Director Aidan Warren, who was watching the competition, commented that “tennis, and sport in general, is an important part of the community. An event like this encourages players from across the rohe and gives them an opportunity to connect and challenge themselves. We’re proud to show support for Waikato Tennis.”

Congratulations to all the players and supporters who came down to watch and made it a memorable day.
