Ko Kahurangi Tēnei

Introducing, Kahurangi

Our Kahurangi roopu – previously known at McCaw Lewis as the “Māori Legal Team” are a committed team of lawyers specialising in kaupapa Māori including Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ture Whenua Māori.

Kahurangi is led by Executive Director Renika Siciliano. She says the name change came as a collective decision to align with who we are, “the shift from being known as the “Māori Legal Team” to Kahurangi reflects the values we set ourselves, the mahi we do, and what our clients expect of us.”

Kahurangi has a proud history at McCaw Lewis, beginning as a small roopu under the guidance of Judge Stephen Clark, it has grown exponentially with the leadership of Judge Aidan Warren. Kahurangi are excited to continue to add to that history and legacy of assisting Māori landowners, whānau, hapū and iwi to achieve their objectives and, guided into this next chapter by Renika.

Kahurangi is taken from the whakataukī, “Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei” meaning to pursue excellence or pursue that which is of value to you. This also forms part of our firm values. In the context of the team name, Kahurangi represents excellence and forms a key part of our overall strategy to pursue excellence in all areas of our mahi. It is a name that we feel encompasses the mana of our mahi, our clients and our team.

Renika is joined in the team by lawyers Kylee Katipo, Kuru Ketu, James Lewis, Huia Harding, Cree Ratapu and Carmen Mataira. Executive Assistant Tasha Burton provides exceptional support to the group and our clients.
